How to Get Into fabric London: Hours, Last Entry, the Queue, ID and fabricfirst

How to get into fabric: doors 23:00, last entry an hour before close, no re-entry, ID scanned, bags searched, timed tickets and the fabricfirst fast track.

To get into fabric, buy a timed ticket on Resident Advisor, bring an original passport, national ID card, driving licence or PASS card, and arrive inside the entry window on your ticket. At the door your ID is scanned, you pass a metal detector and your bag is searched. Doors are 23:00; Fridays close at 06:00 and every Saturday fabric lists for November and December closes at 07:00. Last entry is one hour before close, and there is no re-entry. This is fabric's door process in one place, with Marcel Dettmann's Saturday on 7 November as the worked example. For which night to pick, the fabric programme guide has every date to the end of December.

Getting into fabric at a glance

  • Age: 18 and over, unless an outside event says otherwise.
  • ID: original passport, foreign national ID card, driving licence or PASS card. No photocopies. It is scanned.
  • Last entry: one hour before close. No re-entry, except on the few tickets sold with it.
  • Not allowed: business suits, flags, glow wear, stag nights.
  • Fast track: fabricfirst, £10 a month on a three-month minimum, for you plus one.
  • Welfare: WhatsApp +44 (0)7453 554 961, all night.
  • Capacity: about 1,600 across three rooms, by fabric's Resident Advisor venue listing.

Opening hours and last entry, night by night

fabric's FAQ gives Fridays and Saturdays as 11pm to 6am, with "extended parties that may go on longer", and Sundays as 11pm to 4am. The listings are what count: every Friday on sale this autumn runs 23:00 to 06:00, and every Saturday listed for November and December runs 23:00 to 07:00. The licence lets fabric open around the clock, seven days a week, which is why the finish moves; how that compares with the city's other big rooms is in FOLD vs fabric vs E1 vs Drumsheds. What never moves is last entry, one hour before the end.

Re-entry is the one exception worth knowing. On normal nights you cannot leave and come back. The long weekenders, October's 27th birthday and December's Continuum, are sold on Resident Advisor as "+ re-entry" tickets. If your ticket does not say it, you are in for the night.

Tickets and the queue

Every fabric club night sells through Resident Advisor. Barcodes reach the RA Guide app or the members' area 48 hours before the event, to stop touting, and sold-out nights have RA's resale. The tickets are timed, and that is the key to the queue. A typical Saturday has "entry before 11:30pm" and "entry before 12am" tickets, anytime releases, and a cheap "entry after 4am" ticket; most Fridays make the late one "after 3am". fabric asks you to check your ticket for its entry time, and its entry policy charges an entry upgrade fee if you arrive outside it, so treat the slot as a deadline. The pricing also tells you when the door is busiest: fabric discounts arriving before 11:30pm and after 3am or 4am, which leaves midnight to 3am as the crush.

No ticket? fabric holds some back for the door, and when a night has sold out in advance, more go on sale from 11pm. There is no paying guest list, and because there is no re-entry you cannot buy one early and come back later.

The worked example: Saturday 7 November

Marcel Dettmann, Ellen Allien and Jayson Wynters in Room 1, Shonky b2b Marie Montexier in Room 2, Serenne, Josh Keit and Nate Oldfield in Room 3. Doors 23:00, close 07:00, last entry 06:00. On 25 September the £10 early access and £22 first release had sold out; still on sale, all plus RA fee, were entry before 11:30pm at £15, before midnight at £20, anytime releases from £25 to £35, students at £15, entry after 4am at £15 and the fabricfirst ticket at £15. Set times come out on the night, sometimes early on fabric's community WhatsApp and Telegram.

What I would do: buy the before-midnight ticket, be on Charterhouse Street by 23:30 with ID out, and start in Room 2 while Room 1 fills. If you only want Dettmann's last hours, the after-4am ticket costs the same £15, as long as you are through the door before 06:00.

fabricfirst: is it worth it?

fabricfirst's club tier costs £10 a month with a three-month minimum, or £8.33 a month billed annually. It gives £10 off at the door and the lowest online price, fast-track entry for you plus one, a members' space on the mezzanine when it is open, and a QR code for the door. The members' ticket on RA is £15 plus fee on most nights, against £22 to £35 for anytime tickets. fabric's small print says the speed of the fast track depends on how many security staff are on that night.

My view: it pays for itself if you go at least once a month, because one Saturday on the members' ticket instead of a £25 to £35 anytime ticket saves £10 to £20. For a single visit it is not worth it, since the minimum is £30.

ID, scanning and searches

fabric accepts a valid passport, foreign national ID card, driving licence or Home Office-approved PASS hologram card, originals only, so no photos of your passport on your phone. Your ID is scanned as a condition of the premises licence, the data may be kept indefinitely, and you cannot enter if you refuse. Some guides still say fabric is over-19s at weekends, a condition reported when the club reopened after the 2016 licence fight; the current licence on Islington's register sets the minimum age at 18, and so does fabric's FAQ. What other London clubs accept is in what ID London clubs accept.

The search is compulsory: every guest and bag is searched and screened with metal detectors, under HD CCTV with audio, and there can be further searches inside. The licence also requires searches on exit and random drug searches in the smoking area. There are drug disposal bins in the queue; anyone found with drugs is banned and reported to the police, and anyone asking for or offering them is banned for life. Prescription medication is allowed in its original packaging and is registered with the on-site medics. You cannot bring drinks in, and stickers go over phone cameras at the door under the no-photo policy.

What not to wear or bring

Dress as you like, with three exceptions: business suits, flags and glow wear. The door can also refuse an outfit it thinks does not suit the night, stag nights are not allowed, and a weapon means a ban and the police. The wider London picture is in what to wear to London clubs.

Inside: cloakroom, welfare and access

Cloakroom. A staffed cloakroom for the whole night is a condition of fabric's licence. The price is not published on fabric's site, so budget for it. Lost property is kept for four weeks; email the club, then collect on Tuesdays 4pm to 8pm or Fridays to Sundays 10pm to 11pm.

Welfare. fabric runs welfare staff and a medic team on club nights and says you will not be banned for reporting that you feel unwell. Message the welfare WhatsApp on +44 (0)7453 554 961 at any point, or tell any member of staff. For a break, there is seating opposite the sunken bar between Rooms 1 and 2, and the smoking area is open all night.

Access. Room 1 is wheelchair accessible, Room 2 is reached by a steep ramp, and Room 3 is up stairs with no lift. The lift can be out of action, so check on the same WhatsApp number before you travel. Carer tickets are free; email in advance with a PIP or DLA letter or a Nimbus card.

Getting there and getting away

fabric is at 77a Charterhouse Street, EC1M 6HJ. Farringdon, on the Elizabeth line, Thameslink and the Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines, is the nearest station; walk towards Smithfield Market and turn right onto Charterhouse Street. Barbican, one stop east on the same Underground lines, is the alternative. On Friday and Saturday nights fabric points people to Chancery Lane for the 24-hour Central line. At close, the club does not let people wait around the entrance, so walk a few streets before booking a cab and keep your phone out of sight. Routes home are in how to get home after clubbing in London, and the area is covered in fabric vs Ministry of Sound.
