ADE from London 2026: Eurostar, EES, Hotels and Getting Home at Night
ADE from London: Eurostar in 4h19 from £39, EES fingerprints at St Pancras, 2026 hotel taxes and which Amsterdam night buses run each night.

The direct Eurostar from London St Pancras reaches Amsterdam Centraal in 4 hours 19 minutes, from £39 one way, against a 52-minute flight from Southend plus a train from Schiphol that gets you to Centraal within 20 minutes, and since the EU's Entry/Exit System went fully live in April, your first crossing means fingerprints and a photo at the border. On Eurostar that check happens at St Pancras, before you board. This covers the journey, the border, hotel taxes, where to sleep, night transport, drug checking and health. For the festival itself, read our full ADE 2026 guide; for the nights, the day-by-day guide.
ADE from London at a glance
- Getting there: Eurostar direct in 4 h 19 min from £39 one way; easyJet from Southend five times a week; Stena Line rail and sail from Liverpool Street from £75.30 one way.
- Border: EES replaced passport stamps on 10 April 2026. Your passport must be under 10 years old on arrival and valid three months after you leave. No ETIAS yet.
- Clocks: both countries go back an hour on Sunday 25 October at the same moment.
- Hotel taxes: 21% VAT plus Amsterdam's 12.5% city tax, about a third on a net room rate.
- Where to stay: wherever your way home works.
- Night transport: on Wednesday and Sunday night only two of GVB's ten night buses run.
- Drug checking: €2.50 cash a sample, Dutch-bought drugs only, lab results in a week.
- Health: GHIC or EHIC plus travel insurance; 112 for an ambulance.
London to Amsterdam: train, plane or boat
Eurostar is the easy default: border checks happen before departure, so at Amsterdam you just walk out. Ignore the "3 hrs 52 mins" in Eurostar's page summary: the direct train takes 4 hours 19 minutes.
| Route | Journey | Arrive or check in | Fare, checked 13 October 2026 |
| Eurostar, St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal | 4 h 19 min each way | 75 min before at St Pancras (gate shuts at 30); 75 to 90 min at Amsterdam | From £39 one way, Standard |
| easyJet, Southend to Schiphol | 52 min average flight, then up to 20 min by train | Set by the airline; allow extra time for EES flying home | Not sampled |
| KLM, Heathrow or London City to Schiphol | About 1 h 15 min, per KLM | Set by the airline | Not sampled |
| Stena Line Dutchflyer, Liverpool Street to Hook of Holland | Crossing from 6 h 30, then metro to Schiedam and under 1 h 30 by train | Set by Stena Line | From £75.30 one way; Dutch metro and train extra |
At the time of writing (mid October 2026), Southend lists easyJet flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, which fits an ADE Wednesday out and a Sunday home. Schiphol's station sits under the arrivals hall, and Uber riders use the signed App Pick-up Point.
EES, passports and ETIAS

The Entry/Exit System started in stages on 12 October 2025 and has been fully operational across Schengen since 10 April 2026. For Eurostar, the FCDO says your details are taken at St Pancras before you leave the UK. On your first visit you may be sent to a booth to register fingerprints and a photo; children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted but may be photographed. It is free, the record lasts three years, and you may give a fingerprint or photo again on the way out, so allow more time going home.
Passport rules are unchanged: issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive, and valid at least three months after the day you leave Schengen. ETIAS, the paid online authorisation, is not needed for ADE 2026. The European Commission says it is not in operation, takes no applications and will announce a start date several months before launch; none had been announced at the time of writing (mid October 2026). The FCDO's Netherlands entry page, updated on 11 August, does not mention it. Any site charging you for one this month is not the EU.
The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October
The Netherlands goes back at 03:00 on Sunday 25 October and the UK at 02:00 the same night, which is the same instant, so Amsterdam stays an hour ahead all week. In Amsterdam the hour from 02:00 to 03:00 runs twice, and the timetable shows two 02:46 night trains to Schiphol. An all-nighter billed in summer time, as AMF is, ends an hour earlier on the clock. For AMF and Awakenings, the AMF 2026 guide and the Awakenings ADE 2026 guide cover the trains home from the ArenA and Halfweg.
Hotel taxes in 2026, and where to base yourself
VAT on overnight stays went from 9% to 21% on 1 January 2026, even if you paid in 2025, and Amsterdam adds a tourist tax of 12.5% of the price before VAT. A room at €100 a night before tax costs €133.50. If a site already shows the price with VAT, the city tax adds roughly another 10%. Three of ADE's partner hotels, nhow Amsterdam RAI, NYX Hotel and Zoku Amsterdam, give Pro Pass holders a discount; our ADE Pro Pass 2026 verdict weighs that up. Otherwise I would choose the bed by the journey home:
- Near Centraal: all ten night bus lines run from there, the F3 ferry runs around the clock and night trains to Schiphol leave hourly.
- Westerpark: Conscious Hotel Westerpark is on the Westergas site by the Gashouder, but its night buses, the N81 and N88, run only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
- Zuidoost: for the ArenA, AFAS Live or Ziggo Dome, the N85 and N87 run every night.
- Outside the city: NS night trains run every night, roughly hourly, between Rotterdam, The Hague HS, Leiden, Schiphol, Amsterdam Centraal and Utrecht, at the daytime fare.
Getting around at night, Wednesday to Sunday
GVB runs ten night buses from Centraal. Eight (N81, N82, N83, N84, N88, N89, N91, N93) run only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights; only the N85 and N87 to Zuidoost run every night. The last trams leave Centraal between about 00:34 and 00:45, and the free F3 ferry to Buiksloterweg runs 24 hours. Times are from 12 October timetable data; check the GVB app.
| Night | Night buses | Last metro 52 from Zuid / 54 from Centraal | F4 ferry to NDSM | Night trains to Schiphol |
| Wed 21 into Thu 22 | N85 and N87 only, about hourly | 00:46 / 00:21 | Last 01:45 | 01:46, 02:46, 03:46, 04:46 |
| Thu 22 into Fri 23 | All ten | 00:46 / 00:21 | Last 01:45 | 01:46, 02:46, 03:46, 04:46 |
| Fri 23 into Sat 24 | All ten | 01:45 / 01:31 | All night, every 30 min | Late trains to 01:05, then hourly |
| Sat 24 into Sun 25 | All ten, last ones about 07:10 to 08:20 | 01:45 / 01:31 | All night, every 30 min | As Friday, 02:46 twice |
| Sun 25 into Mon 26 | N85 and N87 only, about hourly | 00:46 / 00:21 | Last 01:45 | 01:46, 02:46, 03:46, 04:46 |
OVpay lets you tap in and out with a contactless card or phone on GVB and NS. GVB caps a day of contactless travel at €10.50, night buses excluded. Without a Pro Pass, which includes five days of GVB travel, code ADE2026 takes 20% off day tickets in the GVB webshop. Car taxis from a rank or hailed on the street are capped at €4.31 plus €3.17 a kilometre and €0.52 a minute: €34.30 for 7 km in 15 minutes in the government's example. For daytime plans that cost nothing, see ADE's free events.
Drug checking on a three-night trip
This is harm-reduction information, not encouragement. Possessing hard drugs is illegal in the Netherlands in any amount, and Unity says most venues are zero tolerance and may call the police.
- Jellinek, Jacob Obrechtstraat 92: Wednesday to Friday, 17:00 to 20:30, so 21 to 23 October.
- GGD Amsterdam, Valckenierstraat 4: Monday and Tuesday 17:30 to 20:30, Saturday 13:30 to 16:30, so Saturday 24 October.
- Cost: €2.50 a sample, cash only, anonymous, no appointment; three samples at most, one in busy periods.
- Dutch-bought only: drugs bought abroad are refused.
- Instant or a week: a pill already in the database, 30 to 50% of pills per Jellinek, gets an answer on the spot, as do speed, ketamine and MDMA powder. Everything else goes to the lab, with the result by phone about a week later.
- Short stays: Jellinek's English page mentions visitors "staying in Amsterdam for more than a week", but its Dutch page says anyone in or near Amsterdam can test, wherever they live. You will be gone before any lab result.
At the time of writing, Jellinek warns of an ecstasy pill with a Trump logo containing PMMA, which it says can be very dangerous.
Health cover and help
A GHIC or EHIC covers medically necessary state healthcare, not private clinics or getting you home, so the FCDO says take travel insurance too. During ADE, Touristdoc at Sint Antoniesbreestraat 88 sees walk-in visitors daily from 08:00 to 20:00. ADE says it is free with a valid EHIC but does not mention the UK GHIC, so ask first. For an ambulance dial 112.

| One 7 km taxi | Up to €34.30 | 2026 rank maximum |
